Zamboni makes historic ice scrapping to Assiniboine Park.

Sunday January 25, 2009
On a frosty Sunday afternoon against strong westerly winds, the Zamboni made a historic pass on the trail section between Omand’s Creek and Assiniboine Park.

Area residents gathered throwing flowers, and spraying champagne as the zamboni shaved the lumpy sections smooth for skaters. Bourkevale Community Club members marveled at the zamboni operator’s skill and the ice-scrapping efficiency of the machine.

Upon arrival at Assiniboine Park, Zamboni operator Michael Jordan, dismounted from the pilot seat, set foot on the smooth, icy surface and exclaimed:” One small step for Winnipeg…one giant leap for the River Trail.”

Historic Arrival at Assiniboine Park When asked if along the journey he was ever scared, Michael Jordan answered:”I didn’t have time to be scared or anything, just very cccold. We have a job to do, a mission to accomplish and we’ve been training to do it. I never doubted we would get here.” Zamboni operator Michael Jordan beaming with joy upon arrival at Assiniboine Park

Blazing a new section of the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail: Omands Creek to Assiniboine Park

On Saturday, January 17 a Bobcat ploughed its way through to Assiniboine Park from Omands Creek.  With the help of our sponsor, Miles Antony of Winnipeg Environmental, we made the preliminary connection to the existing River Trail.   Now the hard part begins, we need to make it skatable!

Located 8.5 km from The Forks, the Bourkevale Community Club has opened its doors to the public. Heated change rooms, hot chocolate and best of all heated toilettes! Please note: the snow has been moved off the ice, but the section of the River Trail from Omand’s Creek to Assiniboine Park is not yet open to the public.  Gary Kristiansen of the Bourkevale Community Club checking out the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail.
